Grading Policy for 7th and 8th Graders
Grades are based on an accumulation of points during each grading period. Each test or assignment is designated a certain number of points (see below). At the end of each marking period, a final total of all points possible is calculated. Percent and letter grades are then determined based on the total number of points accumulated by each student.
HOW POINTS ARE ACCUMULATED
*PARTICIPATION (classroom and concerts) 100 POINTS POSSIBLE
PRACTICE LOGS (Total # of logs TBA) up to 75 POINTS POSSIBLE (Quarter 1 only)
PLAYING/WRITTEN TESTS varies per test
EXTRA CREDIT
PRIVATE LESSON/AFTER SCHOOL PRACTICE 5 POINTS
VARIOUS PAPER ASSIGNMENTS 1-3 POINTS
EXTRA PRACTICE LOGS (when not assigned) up to 7 POINTS
PRACTICE LOGS WITH 130 OR MORE MINUTES at least 1 POINT added
*Points will be deducted from a students participation grade for forgetting equipment (instruments, reeds, mouthpieces, music, pencils) or MISSING CONCERTS (Loss of 25 POINTS for the concert grade for an UNEXCUSED ABSENCE).
Students begin each quarter with a clean slate. Below is the approximate grading scale:
A: 180-200 points
B: 160-179 points
C: 140-159 points
D: 120-139 points
F: 119 points or less
EFFORT/CITIZENSHIP
Students will receive an effort and citizenship grade each quarter. Citizenship is based on the school-wide rubric. The effort grade is based mainly on practice log turn-in and how well one works in class. Here is the scale for the effort grade:
All practice logs turned in: Outstanding
TWO missing log: Good
THREE missing logs: Satisfactory
FOUR missing logs: Needs Improvement
FIVE or MORE missing logs: Unsatisfactory
It is possible to receive a letter grade of an A in band and receive a U for effort if practice logs are not turned in.
Practice logs must be turned in on time. It is expected that all 7th/8th grade band members practice at least 120 minutes per week. Some practice is better than none. Remember: it is better to turn in a practice log with 10 minutes on it rather than to not turn one in at all. NEW POLICY: LATE PRACTICE LOGS LOGS WILL HAVE 1 (one) POINT DEDUCTED FROM THE "EARNED" GRADE EACH DAY IT IS LATE UNTIL A ZERO IS REACHED. If you are absent or sick, please write that on your log so we know.
Effort and citizenship grades can affect 8th grade participation in certain activities.
********Attendance at ALL concerts is mandatory and is a major part of a students grade. PLEASE speak with the directors, if you should have a conflict, at least one week prior to a performance. Often times, we can work conflicts out if given enough notice. UNEXCUSED absences will be reflected on the band grade. Decisions are final and are at the discretion of the director.
